At the start of this blog I answered comments by addressing them in a post. Some people suggested that instead of doing that I should go to the commentator's blog and reply individually. That becomes difficult when some of my comments are anonymous. It's also easier for me to nab them all in one go within a single post. I figured that I would start answering them by posting once more. [:
Q: "Do you think of me as fat?" - Jo
A: I can't see you so it's hard for me to answer that question. A weight that I think is "fat" on my body may not be "fat" on yours. Regardless of what my answer might have been, please don't worry about what I think. What matters is that you're happy with who you are. My circumstances advocate that I do what I do to attain that. Yours may be different.
Q: "Am I speaking correctly?" - Skylines
A: Yes! You're doing a great job, especially for someone who is learning English as a second language. Thank you for your compliments.
Q: "Can I know what's your height?" - Rochelle
A: I'm around 5'7'' or 171cm. (It's a little known fact that I dislike my height. As far as I'm concerned, it's not little enough to be "short" and not tall enough to be "tall.")
Q: "Does a 100 calorie/80calorie diet for 1 or 2 months work?" - Anonymous
A: It sounds like it will work extremely well and give you quick results, but I think it's a little extreme. I wouldn't suggest sticking to 80 calories a day for 2 months. Try mixing in some higher calorie days.
Q: "I want to lose weight fast but I don't know how to start. Please help?" - Anonymous
A: Check out the "diets" tab at the top of my blog. Picking any of those is a great place to start.
Q: "In the fasting time have you done some exercise, aerobics or some running?" - Anonymous
A: I hardly exercise even when I'm not fasting. I do not do any extra exercise when I am fasting. I'm actually quite lazy by choice. My thought process is, "if I'm going to endure starvation then I'll lounge around and not make myself feel guilty about it." It motivates me to fast longer and gives me a sense of reward during the hardship.
Q: "Did you use any vitamins?" - L.A.
A: Yes, I take several different types daily. Here is a post about it, and here is another.
Q: "Why don't you update more often?" - Lena
A: I update when I feel inspired. Unfortunately I'm much more addicted to pen and paper, so a majority of my thoughts are scribbled away.
Q: "Are you from Sweden?" - Anonymous
A: No, nor have I ever been there. It's a coincidence that "gaunt visage" is a Swedish phrase, for it is also a valid word combination in English.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Here's some thinspiration to keep you going! The theme is... alternative fashion and costumes.

It sounds like you are regretting it already. But were you using them at all or were they in a closet somewhere? This might just be the same feeling when you give something away to Goodwill. If you haven't used it/thought of it in 6 months to a year, then get rid of it. If they were hanging up somewhere then maybe you should cancel your auction and bring those beauties home! :)

Are you using the Bluetooth keyboard? That won't work with Windows XP setup. You'll need to have a wired one hooked up until after the Bootcamp drivers are installed. If you only need one program, though, you might be better off with Parallels or VMWare Fusion so that you can continue doing tasks on the Mac OS at the same time.
Parallels or Fusion it doesn't seem worth it price wise for me, not just for the one program anyway.
I have a pretty high spec Windows laptop that is used solely for this program, but it seems such a waste, and its hassle having to start that every time I need to update the data base.
Now my keyboards working again lol (it is a bluetooth one), I have the option of booting windows on start up but its the same black screen as before. I must have done something wrong, but i'm struggling to find what! It can't be the keyboard at this stage can it?

Check the SMART data on the drive and do a short test:
http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
Why does everyone keep using this program?? It is so unreliable.. I use something called disk radar and its 300 times better than voltans poc program. Either disk radar or DiskTools Pro - those are much better than using voltans garbage program.. for instance.. I got a 2TB drive a few days ago and already smart utility says its failing.. I call BS here and then I ran it under windows and using disktools pro and disk radar - the drive passed all tests and is NOT failing..
Stay away from smart utility - its a POC program (POC=Piece of crap).

When I enter iPhoto, I usually notice that the font is noticably bigger in the Source area than it is in iTunes. Basically, it looks like the exact same size as in iCal's Calendar area. It IS NOT the Large size, but is in-between the small and large size.
I have tried changing the source size and it works until I close it. When I start iPhoto back up again, it goes back to the bigger size. Is there anyway I can stop this from happening, or is this just a common bug with iPhoto?

When I say I'm broke I mean seriously broke. I just lost my job and am having a tough time finding one. I intend to get a new iBook sometime next year which will come with a wireless card and the newest OS (I'm using 10.2.8) and a bit more ram than I have. To do all these upgrades to my current iBook wouldn't make any sense when I could get a new one for just a bit more. I intend to give this one to my mother for she would only use this on a desk and wouldn't need the wireless. Perhaps if I had the extra money I would upgrade this now and wait for a good deal on a newer model, but circumstances are what they are.

If your miniDV has RCA inputs(red/yellow/white), plug VHCS player in, make miniDV dups and transfer to computer via firewire. If your miniDV doesn't have RCA inputs your out of luck without buying more equipment.
This is assuming your using a MAC, some PC laptops have RCA in.

I am about to buy one of these new iMac 27" and I have a second monitor that has RGB (VGA) and HDMI entries. What cable should I buy to convert thunderbolt to HDMI? What's the best/recommended one?
Will the output deliver the audio too?
I have searched Apple and apparently they have no cable there for doing that.
thanks.

Yeah the buttons at the bottom of that window are the ones.
Wow, they've completely changed the "about this Mac" screen for the first time in Mac OSX. Its looks way better, and you no longer need to go into the system profiler to get basic stats, or use iStat Pro. Wow...:D Can NOT wait to get Lion!
It's still not in the dashboard so I'm not too sure about it replacing iStat Pro. Don't think I want to click :apple: -> About this Mac -> System and then view the information. Would rather just hit F4

I'd definitely go for the lighter model. Of course you're going to have to factor in costs but if they are the same price you should definitely get the lighter one.
I have a BlackBook and although i don't really mind the weight, it gets tiresome carrying that along with stuff for school when I'm constantly walking long distances. A new backpack will probably remedy the problem though :)

Hi,
I am trying to run a java solution remotely on a server, I am using the below command in the terminal:
java RemoteShellClient 87.120.209.147 50001 "cmd" "java -jar -Dusername=xxx -Dpassword=xxx -DcCodes=all C:\BetInTime.jar ServiceSF"
Confidential info hidden with x's.
But am getting the below error:
Invalid input data
Could this be a syntax error?
Thanks
OK, on further inspection, the shellscript seems to rely on some batch files:
CommandRunner.class
RemoteShell.jar
SockData.class
CommandRunner.java
RemoteShellClient.class
SockData.java
JavaBuild.bat

java RemoteShellServer %1 %2
set ClassPath=RemoteShell.jar
java RemoteShellClient %1 %2 %3 %4
javac -g:none *.java
jar cvf RemoteShell.jar *.class
Do you think it would help to rewrite these as bash files?

Yup, I got the ad screen when I went to the site out of curiosity, after seeing this thread. Pathetic and annoying.
I used to like Spymac but I stopped visiting the site last year after the changes. Sure it may have its fans but to me it's a pile of dung. Can someone please explain where the "spy" is in Spymac, especially these days?
MacRumors, on the other hand, is as terrific as it's ever been. But we know that. Yes we do.

Im assuming that its an Apple LCD
If not what make is your LCD?
How old is it?
It sounds like dust and oxide are creeping in, perhaps from improper sealing of any of the multiple lamintes that comprise an LCD screen.
If it has a cold cathode tube I cant see the reason for only the outer edges to yellow. If the light pipe is oxygen sensitive, it might account for it yellowing around the edges.
EL backing also ages uniformly, but most LCDs dont use this technology.
If you or anybody else has ever taken the screen apart, you might have improperly put it back together. Perhaps the screen is pressing to tightly against the frame. This would cause tweening of the matrix and bending of the light pipe, and ether one could account for a localized spectral shift.
I am just throwing out ideas to see what people think.

The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards.
Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.
The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.
Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.
Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth.
It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.
"This eruption is directed right at us," said Leon Golub, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
"It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time."
Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.
Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”.
The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.
It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools.
Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan's orbiting Hinode telescope.
"What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing,” the UK solar expert said.
“This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.
"These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the Sun's huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.”
She added: "It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption.
"Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds.
“This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes."link (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/7923069/Nasa-scientists-braced-for-solar-tsunami-to-hit-earth.html)

You'll need to create a new partition using Disk Utility. Once Win7 is up and running, just reformat it as NTFS.

I would wait until there is a tear down by ifixit to confirm or refute that. In the past you had to buy brackets and other cables i believe to do this yourself. Its a pain and you may want to wait for TB external SSD drives which would be faster and less of a pain than opening up your iMac
External 1TB SSD would be heaven, considering it won't be inconveniently stuck in your iMac for the price you pay and you can use it on whatever.. but I heard that won't happen any time soon?
In regards to the OP.. from what I've heard from an Apple professional over the phone, is that I can update my 1TB to 2TB or an SSD in a few years if I want to via a technician.. so yes, these ones are possibly upgradeable if the previous weren't?
I just couldn't believe that this guy from Apple was trying his best to convince me NOT TO spend an extra 450 on the SSD option, very friendly and helpful; was talking me out of it for a good 20 minutes. Which says something. Seems pretty genuine to me.

Yes. The Shuffle will indeed work as a jump drive between Windows and Mac boxes.
I have a Mac at work, and a pc at home. I work as a PR writer, so I regularly use my 1 gig Shuffle to bridge the two computers: Word docs, Entourage/Outlook e-mail archives, etc. Never had a problem.

Anything that requires more disk access will lead to more wear and tear. Secure erasing, which generally involved overwriting "blank" areas of the disk with a series of information, will always be more effort, and hence more wear and tear, than simply removing a directory entry and leaving the data on the drive.

I'm looking for a good earphone with mic for my iphone 4 and since I like the designs of the tangled-free flat cables, I've short listed these 3 earphones: Monster Beats Tour by Dr. Dre, A-jays Four, and Ultimate Ears 500vi/400vi.
Has anyone compared these 3 earphones before? I've seen one comparison between Tour vs. A-Jays Four but not convincing enough for me to decide between these two :/
I've only used the tours but the cord fell apart on me within weeks. It seems like a sturdier design than the Kilpsch S4i's I was looking at (which apparently had better sound quality than the dres according to reviews) but the cable looked so flimsy that I chose the dres instead. Bad choice though, as the cable was terrible. I'd stay away from them if I were you, not nearly worth what they cost

Thanks arn, I think it will work well. A few questions:
I'm assuming that the "Featured Guides" links at the top of the forums will be changed to automatically refer to them, but will they be displayed anywhere else (eg on the main pages of MacRumors and the guides)? As it is I think the user encouragement is limited by the fact that it's not obvious they are world-editable until you visit the pages themselves.
Are you wanting just one world-editable article each week, or a few? I think having about 5 per week would be more advantageous since a single article represents such a small portion of the Guides, and we have enough people to watch over changes. There are only so many improvements that can be made to one article, so a week seems like a long time to focus on a single page. Take for example the Aperture article, which has only had one change in the last 6 days yet has been the only featured guide during that period.
Finally, would there be a set time each week for the article selection to change, and would it be just you or all the sysops choosing them? If the latter, would there be prior discussion as to which articles to select (eg in the WorldEdit talk page), or would sysops just add articles without consultation?

Take for example the Aperture article, which has only had one change in the last 6 days yet has been the only featured guide during that period.
Finally, would there be a set time each week for the article selection to change, and would it be just you or all the sysops choosing them? If the latter, would there be prior discussion as to which articles to select (eg in the WorldEdit talk page), or would sysops just add articles without consultation?

I'm trying to fix 5 year old Macbook for some one .The problem is hard-drive space used up but the person has very little pictures ,music and work on the computer.
Some how only 7GB free of the 80GB hard-drive.
There is a similar thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=672477
Thread never got resolved.
well normally when I'm trying fix the same problem on PC running windows it is do to.
1.Bad sector
2.swap file /page file
3.hidden OS system support files
4.malware
5.windows files to keep OS running and windows needs lots of files and I mean lots, lots and lots of files!!!
But do not have that much experience here. What could the problem be.

I had recently installed the trial version of My3G mainly to use for Skype & Facetime and had noticed battery life was really being effected (without use of said apps), then I started to notice the remnants of a banner advertisement at the top of the screen when unlocking and switching between apps, after uninstalling I am not seeing those ads any longer so I assume it was My3G doing it.
First question, has anyone else noticed these background ads? Second question, if you purchase My3G does it still do that?
Take your pirating elsewhere.

Prioritize the key words. They should stand out. Others can be reduced or eliminated for the most impact. Perhaps...

I heartily agree, I even paid for a Pixmania card to get discounts and better service. It doesn't work, the discounts are only applied to special items.
As to service, what service? I bought a Nikon Coolpix that had a screen that failed after only 10 days. By the time I had an authorisation to return the item, not in my country but to their office in France, by the time they had sent it to Nikon to confirm there was a problem with the camera and eventually got a refund it took over three months! That was three months of complaining, writing to head office, what aggravation!
Pixmania gets my thumbs down, terrible service.

Thank you very much for the very thorough responses.
As I said I am not the most tech savvy guy in the world and sometimes it's frustrating (as a creative professional) to try and learn the tech side of things on top of having to master FCP,AE,PS,C4D,AI, etc etc.
The flip side of course, is tech geniuses have to put up with my amateurish questions. Heh.

Yes, it does, but you must have a certain post count to reach it.
MacRumors 6502, or 250 posts if I remember correctly, as well as 8 months of membership to the forum.
This is all from memory so my numbers could be off a bit.

It is sold as part of a book (but not actually the entire book on the cd) and the publisher is worried about the cd being copied? Wouldn't you need the book anyway therefore it doesn't matter if the cd is copied; they have the sale regardless of the cd being copied.
If it is any kind of a popular book/cd it will be on the internet before release regardless of copy protection, but if it is a niche market you will probably be fine.

I've had this happen to me.
Seems to happen only when I've rebooted a system (maybe from sleep state -- see the next paragraph for a possible explanation). I guess it sees some ghost of the old system around (BonJour I expect) and renames itself to avoid conflict.
I've got a Mac mini server handling DHCP/DNS. I know this only happens on a specific system that doesn't have a fixed IP address assigned using the "Static Maps" page in Server Admin. But it might not be the server at fault. I also have an AirPort Extreme that does the Wake-on-LAN for the system. Since it responds to BonJour requests for sleeping systems, if it thinks the system being rebooted is asleep when a new one appears with a different IP address (via DHCP assignment).
If I'm right, you can solve the problem by having the DHCP service assign a fixed IP using the Static Maps.
Now if it is the server itself that is changing names, and it has a static IP, I'm baffled.

Refurb Apple products look like new, and has same warranty as new Apple products.

i am finding that Safari 5.1 is almost unusable on Lion. It drops all internet connections and i have to use network preferences to reboot if you will just to get it use my wifi everytime.
the bookmark bar doesn't work and on and on. im using chrome and its fast as heck on lion. too many bugs to use lion for everyday right now...
That has nothing to do with Safari, it's the Wi-Fi changes Apple made in Lion (issue that will be fixed eventually).
What do you mean the bookmark bar doesn't work?
i have the latest developer build of chrome and the latest build of firefox as well and they both work perfectly for me on lion...
I'm using Chrome on Lion, just sucks that the new scrollbars and full screen options aren't there yet.

Did anyone install it already?
I've received it 2 days ago but still have the stealth guard on my iPt which is going to be replaced in a week, so I will put the bse on the replacement-device.
Are those bse for a dry installation? I've received them in an envelope without a solution, just like the stealth guards.

The fact that the artifacts have appeared in the screenshot is a good indication that the LCD is not at fault. It's most certainly a defective GPU. Not much that can be done with it now, ignoring the fact that logic boards are expensive, i'd doubt that Apple would even stock parts for them anymore.

This was funny in the first time I saw it.
that obviously represents the missing: "1 who posts that this is a repost, that it was funnier when Jesus originally posted it to Al Gore shortly after he invented the internet, or that this is just a c&p from reddit a week ago."
and just for macrumors: "1 posting per hour by someone asking when the next version of the lightbulb in question will be released, what improvements will it have, and if they should wait for it in the dark or just buy the current lightbulb."

Not to be pedantic, just ignorant:
I understand that the punctuation marks go inside the quotes (um, not parentheses... maybe you do need him ;)) when part of a quotational reply. However, when used to mark a single word or phrase, it seems as though contemporary "correct" usage allows for the quoted word/phrase to be used as an indivisible object, meaning punctuation would go outside.
But, hey, I'm a programmer geek. I'm happy just to be able to communicate at all.
AP says no. :D

Hi
Let's do this...
This and all my current auctions available at http://auctions.click2debug.com
*** ENDED *** $150 FINAL BID ***
The Nokia 6820 is one of Nokia's series of phones featuring a cleverly-designed flip-open QWERTY keyboard, intended to provide quicker and easier text input. When the keyboard is in use, the 6820's high-resolution 128 x 128-pixel, 4,096 color screen automatically rotates from a vertical to a horizontal orientation for easier viewing. There are also a bunch of other great features with this phone, including a digital CIF camera and video recorder, Bluetooth infrared data transfer, voice dialing, mobile Internet connectivity, high-speed data transmission, and more.
Calling Features
Used simply as a phone, the 6820 features a 4-way joystick for easy navigation to a variety of calling features, including voice dialing for up to 10 numbers, voice commands for up to 9 items, integrated handsfree speakerphone, and the ability to record and send memos, conversations, and sound clips (up to 90 seconds). You'll also get the usual array of polyphonic ring tones, calling modes (including vibrate) and much more. Nokia also supports TTY/TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf), and hearing aid support for the Nokia LPS-3 Loopset, (adapter and Loopset sold separately).
Messaging and Internet
The phone's snappy new design makes it ideal for messaging; you can actually type on the QWERTY keyboard, no more hunting and pecking through the ten key system. In addition to text and picture messaging, you can also send up to four linked messages with up to 160 characters each, and take advantage of distribution lists and predictive text input. The 6820's XHTML browser provides high-speed data transmission via GPRS or EDGE, and access to work and private POP3 and IMAP4 email accounts. You can also send MMS (multimedia messaging service) packets containing combined image, video, text, and voice clips to compatible phones or PCs. To expand your phone's functionality, you can download additional Java applications to add to the ones already included with the phone: E-mail Client, Instant Messaging, Converter, World Clock, and Portfolio Manager, among others.
Organizer
The Nokia 6820's organizer features include a 3,000 character notepad function (now easy to use with the flip out keyboard), as well as the usual phone book with up to 500 contacts, a full calendar, and a to-do list with priority levels, among others. You can also sync up your organizer data with your PC wirelessly via your Bluetooth connection, using the included software (Sync ML or Nokia PC).
Cameras, Fun, and Games
An integrated CIF digital camera lets you take 352 x 288 pixel photos, which you can view on the phone's 4,096 color display, or send to your computer or via MMS to a friend, using the XHTML internet connection. The camera provides night shooting mode, a self-timer feature, and a video clip recorder. Additionally, you can add thumbnail-sized photo images to contacts in your phone book, change your graphical user interface with a variety of themes, and download new ring tones to add to the ones already included with the phone. There are also two games included with the phone: Bounce, Bowling, Chess Puzzle, Water Rapids, and Backgammon
Vital Statistics
The Nokia 6820 weighs 3.53 ounces and measures 1.85 x 4.21 x 0.79 inches. Its Lithium Ion batteries are rated at a minimum of 490 minutes digital talk time, and 420 hours digital standby time. It runs on the GSM at 850/1800/1900 MHz.

Solved the problem by upgrading my iPad using a laptop at the Apple Store. Apparently my home computer had issues connecting to the Apple servers which were getting hammered.

I'm learning about the Picker View and was pretty disappointed that the book didn't go beyond basic stuff. I went thru several other books and online as well as the built in Apple help.
Not one had an example of putting a pic inside the Picker.
The book was a single column, no example of multi column, or custom widths or loading from array.
I still don't know if you make a separate array or multi dementional array, do pics get loaded from url or into array 1st, is there a refresh method if you wish to change the values from another object (say a button the changes the value of a pic or text inside the picker)
Basically I need MUCH more detail, eight book and not one goes into good detail.
Is there any book that REALLY gets under the hood and opens things up?
Of all the programming help/docs/books I read, it's pretty hard to imagine there's not a better book than these.
Amazon's preview thing is pretty worthless, can't get into the meat of the book, the 'contents' doesn't tell you enuff.
Thanks, KarlJay.
